┌──────────────────────────────────┐
│ Maximus-CBCS v1.02 Release Notes │
└──────────────────────────────────┘
This file contains a few items which didn't make it into the
"real" documentation in time for this release, and a few notes
about setting up Maximus. PLEASE READ EVERYTHING IN THIS FILE!
a) IF YOU'RE CONVERTING FROM MAXIMUS V1.00, you'll find conversion
instructions contained in CONVERT.PRN, and you'll also find new
feature information in WHATSNEW.102.
b) IF YOU'RE CONVERTING FROM OPUS-CBCS V1.xx, then you'll have to
print out part of MAX_OP.PRN for conversion instructions, which are
contained in an early chapter in the manual. Conversion steps are
given for both Opus 1.03 and Opus 1.1x.
c) IF YOU ARE A NEW SYSOP, or if you're converting from something
other than Opus v1.x or Maximus v1.00, then you'll have to
install Maximus from scratch. You should print out at least
MAX_OP.PRN before beginning the installation. (It's also
advised that you print out MAX_REF.PRN at some time during the
installation, although it isn't completely necessary.)
NOTE: the CVTUSR utility now supports all of Opus 1.03, Opus
1.10, and QuickBBS-style user files. This means that you can
salvage part of your user file, if you're converting from one of
the above-mentioned programs.
d) The Maximus license has been modified since version 1.00, and it
isn't identical to the license for Opus-CBCS, especially concerning
commercial usage. All SysOps should read LICENSE.MAX before
beginning the Maximus installation.
d) Maximus is distributed in three parts: MAX102-1.LZH, MAX102-2.LZH,
and MAX102-3.LZH. If you do NOT have all three parts, then you're
missing something. You should call one of the addresses listed
near the bottom of this file, to download the complete package.
You should unLZH all of these files into one single directory,
before running the INSTALL program.
e) To install Maximus from scratch, you'll need about 1.1 megabytes
free (minimum). If you want to keep the documentation on-line, add
another 700K. If you wish to decompress the PCBoard emulation
files, add another 200K.
Although Maximus is capable of operating in a lean environment, the
installation program will extract all of the utilities,
documentation, help and support files, all at once. You can trim
this down later by deleting unwanted files.
f) The PCBoard emulator files are contained in the file PCB.LZH, which
will be placed into the SYSTEM directory by the installation
program. Use LHarc to extract PCB.LZH into the system directory,
and read the contained README for more information.
g) The ORACLE utility is not documented in the "WHATSNEW" file.
ORACLE is an off-line .BBS file viewer, which allows you to test
compiled MECCA files wihtout logging on. More information on the
use of ORACLE can be found in the Maximus Operations Manual
(MAX_OP.PRN). Other new utilities added in this release include
ANSI2MEC and an enchanced version of CVTUSR. (Please see
MAX_OP.PRN for more details.)
h) WIMP, the Maximus "Windows/Icons/Mice/Pointers" full-screen set-up
utility was planned to be released with Max v1.02. However, it
wasn't ready in time, and therefore, we will hopefully be releasing
it as a separate archive, soon after the Max 1.02 release. WIMP
will include:
* A windowed, full-screen interface.
* The ability to DIRECTLY edit the .PRM and AREA.DAT/IDX files,
without needing to recompile.
* A multi-layered, pull-down menu system.
* Point-and-shoot mouse support throughout the entire program.
* A complete set of context-sensitive, pop-up help windows.
* And more!
i) All support for the Maximus software is rendered through the MUFFIN
international echomail conference. If your Net Echo Coordinator
does not carry this echo, you can urge him to pick it up from
the Region Echo Coordinator.
And finally, a few things which didn't make it into the documentation
in time for release:
* Both SILT and INSTALL.EXE support a new command-line switch, `-n'.
This switch indicates that you're installing Maximus on a Novell
Local Area Network. Due to a problem with the Novell kernel,
Maximus has problems detecting whether or an EMPTY directory exists.
With this switch enabled, SILT and INSTALL will create a zero-length
file in each directory they create, which is a temporary solution
to the problem. (Please see the section on multi-line operation,
in the Maximus Operations Manual, for more information.)
The most current version of Maximus is always made available through
the worldwide Software Distribution System network. In addition, the
following systems have volunteered to act as distribution sites for
Maximus. You can always file-request the most current version of
Maximus from any of the following sites, using the magic filename of
"MAX":
